Periodontal disease is inflammation and infection affecting the gums and supporting tissues around teeth. Treatment aims to control bacterial deposits and risk factors and to reduce further damage.
Who may be suitable?
Assessment can include gum measurements, tooth mobility, oral-hygiene review and X-rays where justified. Smoking, diabetes and home cleaning can influence risk and response to treatment.
What are the risks and limitations?
Treatment cannot reliably restore every tissue already lost, and disease can recur without effective daily cleaning and maintenance. Temporary sensitivity, tenderness or gum recession may become noticeable after deposits and inflammation reduce.
What should I know about aftercare and maintenance?
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth as instructed, stop smoking and attend periodontal maintenance. Report increasing mobility, swelling or persistent bleeding.
