A knocked-out tooth
If you knock out or loosen a tooth during a fall or accident, it can be a distressing experience. Acting quickly is essential in this type of dental emergency and can make the difference between saving or losing your tooth.

While waiting to see the emergency dentist, you can take paracetamol to help manage any discomfort. At your appointment, your dentist will assess the damage and advise whether your crown can be repaired or if it will need to be replaced.

No, we will aim to take away any pain that you may be experiencing because of your dental emergency. We will aim to make you comfortable and may use a local anaesthetic to numb any pain.
Will you remove my tooth with a dental emergency?
It depends on what your dental emergency is. We will always try to save a tooth rather than remove it, so we will only remove a tooth if there are no other options.

What is emergency dental care?
Urgent dental assessment is appropriate for severe pain, swelling, dental trauma, uncontrolled bleeding or a suspected dental infection. The treatment depends on the cause and may involve drainage, a filling, root canal treatment, extraction or temporary care.
Who may be suitable?
Call the practice or NHS 111 for urgent advice if you suspect a dental abscess or cannot access a dentist. A dental infection does not normally resolve without appropriate dental treatment.
What are the risks and limitations?
Painkillers may ease symptoms temporarily but do not remove the cause. Antibiotics are not a substitute for dental treatment and are only appropriate in particular clinical circumstances.
What should I know about aftercare and maintenance?
Call 999 or go to A&E for difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, swelling affecting the eye, or extensive mouth or facial swelling. Follow all instructions and attend any definitive-treatment appointment.
