How do dental implants work at Smileology in Sevenoaks?
Initial Consultation
At your first free consultation we will check on the health of your teeth and gums. We will take photographs, scans and x-rays. We’ll also talk through the process and benefits of dental implants, and we will discuss your medical history.It is important to check on the health of your gums so that they can support dental implants.
When you are ready to go ahead with dental implant treatment, we will book an appointment at the dental surgery in Sevenoaks.
Dental Implant Surgery
At your next appointment, we will give you a local anaesthetic in your gums. This will mean that you don’t feel anything whilst we carry out the dental implant surgery.
The type of dental implants that you have chosen, will affect the number of dental implants that you have. We will then insert these gently into your gums.
An abutment or screw is then fitted to the implant, and this connects the final piece – the crown or new false tooth into your gum. At this stage, we will fix a temporary crown to your dental implant.
Your mouth and gums may feel sore after dental implant surgery, but this is manageable with paracetamol.
Healing
It is essential that we allow between 2 and 6 months for your gums to heal and for your dental implant to fuse with your jawbone. This process is called osseointegration and is vital to the success of your dental implants.
During this time, Smileology in Sevenoaks will create your custom-made crown or new tooth. This will be colour matched to any remaining teeth that you have or will be made according to the shade that you and your dentist have chosen together.
Fitting of your bespoke tooth

Maintenance
Now that your dental implant surgery is complete, it is important that you maintain your new teeth and gums to ensure the longevity of your dental implants. Dental implants: suitability, treatment and risks
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, usually made from titanium, placed into the jawbone to support a crown, bridge or denture. They can replace one tooth, several teeth or help stabilise a denture. Treatment suitability, stages and timescales vary and require an individual clinical assessment.
Who may be suitable?
Dental implants may be considered when you have missing or failing teeth, reasonable general health, healthy gums and enough jawbone to support an implant. Good daily oral hygiene and commitment to regular dental maintenance are important. Smoking, active gum disease, some medical conditions and certain medicines may increase the risk of complications. Additional imaging or bone grafting may sometimes be required.
What does treatment involve?
Treatment normally begins with an examination, medical-history review and appropriate imaging. The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone and allowed to heal before the final crown, bridge or denture is fitted. Some patients require additional procedures, and the overall treatment time varies according to their clinical needs.
Risks and limitations
Dental implant treatment involves surgery and is not suitable for everyone. Possible complications include discomfort, swelling, bruising, infection, failure of the implant to integrate with the bone, altered sensation, gum inflammation, bone loss around the implant and wear or loosening of the restoration. Smoking, poor oral hygiene and a history of gum disease can increase risk. Your dentist will explain material risks and alternatives before consent.
Alternatives
Alternatives may include leaving the space untreated, a removable denture or a dental bridge. Each option has different benefits, limitations, maintenance requirements and costs. The appropriate choice depends on your oral health and personal priorities.
